Lewis responds to the poet Alan Rooke's theories about poetry, finding modern poetry deficient in that "often the key to a passage in modern poetry depends on something which only the poet[']s friends can know." He also discusses W.H. Auden and Shakespeare's later plays and criticizes Wordsworth's transfer of "critical attention from a fruitful enquiry 'What kind of art is poetry?' to the silly enquiry 'What kind of man is a poet?'"
